elders

The Session of Neelsville Presbyterian Church (NPC) consists of the pastor(s) and ruling elders. The Biblical model of leadership is probably best characterized in the phrase “servant leader.” Just as Christ didn’t come to be served, but to serve (Matthew 20:28), the role of the elders is to be servant leaders as they oversee and shepherd. A ruling elder is a member of Neelsville Presbyterian Church who has been elected by the other members.

The role of the Session can be divided into the two primary capacities of oversight and shepherding. Oversight means they have a fiduciary responsibility on behalf of the congregation to ensure accountability of the church to implement its mission, vision, and values, as well as to provide appropriate legal and financial controls and accountability. Shepherding means they minister alongside the pastor(s) to provide for the spiritual care and nurture of NPC members and regular attendees.

deacons

Our Deacons are elected by the congregation and ordained by the church to embody Christ’s love, by demonstrating leadership in serving people in need, both within and beyond the community of faith. The word “deacon” comes from the Greek word “diakonos” and means “one who serves." It is the same word used by Jesus when he spoke of himself: For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many (Mark 10:45).

The Benevolence Team

This team of deacons provide short-term help and referrals to county services for those in our congregation, as well as residents of the Germantown area (including financial assistance with shut-off and/or eviction notices).

Do you need Deacon or Benevolence Team support? Please contact the church office at 301-972-3916 or office@neelsville.org.

For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me . . . Truly I tell you, just as you did  it to one of the least of these, you did it to me (Matthew 25:35).

TRUSTEES

Our Trustees are elected by the congregation to manage the property and assets of the church. The trustees handle things like building maintenance, lighting, security, IT, landscaping, and insurance. In addition, the trustees ensure that the church facilities are ready for use each Sunday morning and secured afterwards. “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms” (1 Peter 4:10).
